The role

Overview

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer within the AI Foundations group, you will be at the absolute frontier of autonomous vehicle technology. Your daily work will involve the design and execution of sophisticated experiments centered on large-scale deep learning models. This is an applied research role where you will bridge the gap between theoretical breakthroughs and production-ready software, writing high-quality code and rigorous unit tests to ensure the safety and reliability of the 'Waymo Driver.' You will be tasked with solving some of the most complex open problems in the field, including generative modeling and reinforcement learning, to help vehicles navigate diverse urban environments and unpredictable weather conditions. Joining Waymo means becoming part of a legacy that began as the Google Self-Driving Car Project. You will work in a highly collaborative hybrid environment in London, reporting to a Staff Research Scientist and interfacing with elite research teams across the broader Alphabet ecosystem. The team culture is one of scientific curiosity backed by a massive scale of real-world data—over 100 million miles driven on public roads. This context provides an unparalleled playground for an engineer who wants their work to have a tangible impact on global mobility and road safety. This position offers a unique growth trajectory for an engineer looking to define the next generation of AI. By developing foundation models that power fully autonomous ride-hailing services, you will gain experience that is currently available at only a handful of companies worldwide. Success in this role involves not just technical mastery of JAX or PyTorch, but the ability to influence the strategic direction of autonomous driving through data-driven insights and cross-functional collaboration. You will have the opportunity to see your research move from simulation to the streets of major cities, marking a significant milestone in your professional career.
